Certified Carbon Neutral Business

Mole is proud to have partnered with Carbon Neutral Britain to measure and offset our carbon footprint.

Measuring our carbon footprint

The process of becoming certified as carbon neutral was a really useful learning experience for us. Working with the consultants at Carbon Neutral Britain, we collated data on every aspect of our business which contributes to carbon emissions: travel, commuting, energy consumption, waste, overnight stays – everything was collated and then measured on our behalf. CNB follow the ISO 14064 and GHG Emissions Protocol Accounting Standard, so we were comfortable that the process was robust

Offsetting our 2022-23 emissions

The first stage of the process, once our carbon footprint had been measured, was to select a route to offset our impact. it was important to us to know that the projects were genui9ne, and held to a high standard in terms of offsetting.

The projects which CNB support are regulated through the Verra – Verified Carbon Standard (VCS), the Gold Standard – Voluntary Emission Reductions (VER) and the United Nations – Certified Emission Reductions (CER) programmes.

Our team chose to support CNB’s Climate Fund. This supports wind, solar, hydro and cook stove projects, with a strong focus on projects which provide lasting social and economic benefits in developing countries.

We were pleased to be able to support projects which can have a longer-term impact on communities as well as satisfying our carbon offset aims.

Reducing future emissions

Of course, it would be better not to need to offset carbon emissions at all! In reality, our emissions were pretty low – we don’t manufacture and our work is on the whole quite low impact. However, like all businesses, we need to work on doing better. For us this includes measures like:

  • Supporting our team to work from home when they want to
  • Providing free electric vehicle charging at Mole HQ
  • Supporting those who could arrive under their own steam: lockable bike shed and a lovely shower room in the office
  • Encouraging the team to use public transport where tht is practical for business travel
  • Making sure that we focus on reducing purchases and waste, and recycling fully at the office
